SL-28, SL-34 varieties, washed process
Roasted for filter brewing
Blackberry, forest fruits, and light molasses
This coffee comes from the Kainamui washing station in Kirinyaga, Kenya, where it’s grown by around 1,800 smallholder farmers — members of the New Ngariama Farmers Co-operative Society.
Made up mostly of SL-28 and SL-34 varieties, with some K-7, Ruiru 11, and Batian, the cherries undergo traditional processing — pulping, fermenting, washing, and grading — before being dried for around 21 days on raised beds.
Once dried and nearly ready for export, the beans are dry milled and graded again by size. This year, we’ve purchased just one of the grades — the AA, which is the largest of the high quality screen sizes.
For us, this year’s cup profile is big, bold, and intense. It’s highly concentrated in that fantastically juicy way that only the best of Kenyan coffee is, tasting of blackberry, dark forest fruits, and the syrupy-sweetness of light brown sugar or molasses.
This is the sixth consecutive year that we’ve bought from the Kainamui washing station, having done so through import partners, Cafe Imports.
