This new release comes from the Thunguri Factory, a washing station in the foothills of Mt. Kenya, just outside the town of Karatina right on the border of Nyeri County and Kirinyaga County, Central Kenya.
Thunguri is one of nine processing stations operated by the Kibirigwi Farmers Cooperative Society, which was established in 1953 and today represents almost 6,900 active smallholder farmers. Together, these farmers produce exceptional coffees in a region known for its ideal growing conditions and strong focus on quality.
The wet mill sits at around 2,500 metres above sea level, where deep red volcanic soils provide an ideal environment for growing coffee. During harvest, only ripe cherries are carefully handpicked and delivered to the mill on the same day. They are then sorted, pulped and fermented for up to 18 hours before being washed with fresh water from the Kangocho Stream and dried.
A lot of care goes into this process, helping to highlight the distinctive characteristics of the varieties grown here, including SL28, K7, Ruiru 11 and Batian.
In the cup, this coffee is crisp and juicy, with bright notes of mandarin, citrus, yellow grapefruit and orange zest. It has a vibrant and refreshing character, with plenty of sweetness and freshness coming through. A lovely example of the distinctive character we enjoy so much in Kenyan coffees.
This is our third time purchasing coffee from Thunguri, sourced through our import partners at Condesa, and we’re super excited to have it back in the roastery and share this beautiful coffee with you.
