2021 Australian AeroPress Championship: The ‘Compete From Home’ Edition
Posted on
As a consequence of the ongoing omnishambles that we’ve all been enduring, for the first time, the 2021 Australian AeroPress Championship will take place in absentia*. As much as we’d love to have already seen the back of the hot mess that’s consumed the last two years or so, planning in-person, interstate events that are open to spectators just isn’t quite within reach. But instead of binning the whole competition this year, we’re determined to still give Australian competitors the opportunity to take part -- they just need to stay home to do so.In total, we’ll have just 27 competitor places available for the whole country, making anyone who enters literally one in a million. To sign up, competitors need...

My connection to Thunguri began eight years ago. Yours can begin today.

New coffee releases are not rare, but every so often, one really stands out. This season, it's Thunguri. Some of what makes Thunguri special is personal, but a lot of it isn't. While my connection to the name, the place, and the coffee runs deep, it's OK that yours may not. We can change that, and it can start today. Thunguri is one of the first coffee washing stations I visited as a fledgling buyer about eight years ago. As a barista from Melbourne, living and working in London, it was on this first trip Kenyan and Ethiopia that I learned a lot about coffee in a relatively short time.It was my first time seeing the start of the chain,...

Our tasting packs are back.

There's no denying that life in Melbourne and across the rest of the country is challenging right now. While we're feeling the pinch of rolling lockdowns as much as everyone else, we're also choosing to focus just a sliver of our energy and attention onto the silver linings. (They're there, if you look hard enough.) Following closely on from family, health, and all the usual suspects, we're also listing 'fresh crop East African coffees' highly on our August list of 'Things to be thankful for'. To recognise these arrivals — and for a most welcome change of pace — we've put together a tasting pack that showcases these seasonal treasures at their peak.Featuring four sample bags of recent and upcoming coffee...

* NB: This position is now filled * We're looking for an enthusiastic individual to join our small team as a barista. The role involves serving customers at our Roastery & Coffeebar, making coffee drinks to a high standard, restocking and general cleaning, and lending a hand to roastery tasks. Beyond this, we're looking for someone who'll bring their experience and initiative to help shape our fledgling coffeebar into a welcoming and engaging destination. There's a huge opportunity to learn more about sourcing and roasting coffee, and for the right candidate, the potential for ongoing career development. The ideal candidate has a strong background in a similar cafe or coffeebar environment, prizes great customer service, and cares more about flavour...

A seasonal love letter to strawberries, wattle, and coffee.

Allow me to park the guarded copy writing style for a moment and shoot from the hip — as if the first four lockdowns weren't bad enough, there's no denying that this 5th iteration sucks beyond belief. But look on the bright side we must, and thankfully there's a slew of fresh coffees arriving from East Africa, just in time to lift lockdown spirits — principally mine, but I'm hoping yours as well.Every year, coffee lovers around the world look forward to the arrival of fresh east African coffees and despite having a few seasons under my belt now, I'm no exception. The vibrancy and sparkle that these fresh arrivals bring stirs many of the same feelings I get from...

Roasting for Standart Japan

It was back in 2015 that we first became aware of a new coffee magazine being published out of Bratislava in the Czech Republic. Unlike many of the publications that came before, Standart Magazine was more than a thinly-veiled conduit for industry advertising, but instead was a celebration of the people, places, and ideas at the heart of the coffee community. By focusing on great design alongside relevant and engaging journalism, Standart quickly captured the attention and affection of the global coffee community, winning a handful of awards along the way. Over the years since then, as well as being avid readers of the publication, we’ve written articles and snippets for Standart, even partnering with their team on the design...

Introducing SteepShot — a revolutionary single cup coffee brewer.

If you're anything like us and an avid appreciator of well-brewed filter coffee, then we have good news. Just last month we received the first shipment into Australia of the SteepShot — the revolutionary single cup coffee brewer that combines full immersion brewing with pressurised extraction, producing filter coffee of game-changing clarity and aroma. By combining ground coffee and hot water in the sealed brew chamber, internal pressure builds, ensuring an even and thorough extraction. Upon flipping the brewer and opening the release valve, accumulated pressure forces the brewed coffee through the reusable stainless steel filter. Thanks to this revolutionary brewing process, the resulting cup of coffee is both quickly and evenly extracted, while also being sweet, full-bodied, and intensely aromatic.Designed in...

Cows To Rwanda

Within an article written for coffee publication, Standart, our CEO and founder Tim Williams, reflects on his pathway to igniting ‘The Gitesi Project’ — a grassroots initiative to improve the life of Rwandan coffee farmers.

The Gitesi Project

$15,000 is a lot of money in anyone’s book, but when it's used to buy cows for a Rwandan coffee-growing community, it can be life-changing.
Which is why, every year, we bring together an evolving cast of coffee industry partners to contribute to The Gitesi Project: a charitable initiative placing dairy cows with farming households in Rwanda.
